Connect your external hard drive to the computer using the USB cable if you haven't already done so, and then launch iTunes.

Click the 'File' menu in iTunes, and click 'Add to Library' to launch the 'Add To Library' box.

Click the drop-down arrow, and select your external hard drive to display the content on the device. Double-click a folder containing your music files.

Select the songs to upload to the iTunes library, and click the 'Choose' button. Wait for the songs to upload to the iTunes library automatically.

Click the 'Music' link under 'Library' to display uploaded songs in the right pane.

Warning

Do not disconnect your external drive while iTunes is importing songs to its library.
